THE newsroom has been like a doctor's waiting room this week. Of the editorial staff who have been in work, many have been coughing, sneezing, sniffing and generally struggling gamely to get things done. It's that time of year when coughs and sneezes spread diseases, and in a nice open plan office like ours, once one person gets the dreaded lurgy, we can all look forward to sharing it.
The newsdesk has been severely depleted this week, but still we manage to get a quality product on your newsagents' shelves packed with all the very latest local news and views from Conwy county! What would you do without us? We have had two reporters on annual leave, one on ongoing maternity leave and a fourth was taken unexpectedly ill, leaving just two reporters to do the work of six. That's what you call dedication to local journalism!
So what does the Weekly News have to offer this week? We have the sad news of the death of a former Mochdre sports journalist killed in a drink-driving incident in Hawaii. This links in with the launch of the Wales-wide anti-drink driving campaign for Christmas 2006 which will see police breathalysing motorists every morning to make sure their previous night's boozing isn't endangering other drivers and pedestrians next day.
We have in-depth focuses on the flooding issues in the Conwy Valley, as well as the pressing need to strengthen sea defences between Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea. In a week when the North Wales coast has been battered by winds of 60mph or more, making sure water levels are held in check seems doubly important.
We also have a nice piece on the work and fundraising efforts of Ty Gobaith children's hospice in the Conwy Valley, and urge all our readers to make any donation they can to the cause this Christmas. And don't miss our competition to win tickets to see The Charlatans at Llandudno, as well as comedy DVDs that might suit your loved ones this Yuletide!
