Whose box will you tick?

The Welsh Assembly elections are just hours away. You'll soon be off to the polling station to cast your vote, but what of the candidates? Who are the men and women banging on our doors, begging us to tick their box while pledging world peace and free milk?

Many readers will be the sick of the sight of Messrs Pugh and Millar, who will contest the Clwyd West seat, not to mention Denise Idris-Jones, Plaid's Aberconwy candidate Gareth Jones and the other politicians who spend much of their time at photo shoots in a bid to fill the Weekly News's pages.

We try our best to stay impartial and print balanced reports on these characters. We try, if we can, not to mention them at all unless it's newsworthy, and generally we succeed.

But it's difficult when every time you refresh your e-mail inbox (that damn F9 button) there is a message from Plaid Cymru, Labour, the Liberals, Tories and Greens. Their opinion on a "big issue", their take on that national scandal everyone is talking about... A member of the cabinet has dared travel up north for a day to support them and pose for pictures at a local landmark for no apparent reason. Hurrah we cry - or not, as the case may be (and is).

And just you watch, as soon as the new Assembly Government is in place, as soon as the members are given the green light, it'll be quiet for at least a year.

I've been a journalist for the two previous Assembly elections and two General Elections. I've had nightmares about these people and know the trend. Six months of pure publicity, then nothing. Silence.

Roll on Friday morning.
