Busy, busy, busy... The Weekly News has a number of new projects on the go at the moment, and it's been a tricky time trying to juggle them all to make sure we make the best of them and readers benefit the most.
We've had a run of fantastic competitions lately, not least a couple of cash prizes for Debenhams in Llandudno, and this week our main competition is to get the first copy of the new Harry Potter book the very second it is released at 12.01am on July 21. We're favouring the little ones over mums and dads, even though the interest in the Harry Potter franchise has gone demographically global now, but at the end of the day these books were written with children in mind, and that's how the Weekly News likes to think of them too. Check this Thursday's paper to find out how a child you know can win!
This week we also launch our Pet Idol competition, our search for the best pampered pooches, cosseted cats or loveable lambs. Readers can send in their favourite photo of their beloved pet, whether it's a dog, a cat, a rat or even a ferret! The prizes are impressive - a share in a total of £600 in pet-related prizes - but most owners just enjoy seeing their pet in the paper, and especially enjoy voting for them!
Last week we launched our annual Your Champions campaign, our popular search for the heroes and heroines in our communities with a view to thanking and congratulating them at a glittering awards ceremony in the autumn. Too often newspapers are accused of highlighting the bad things in life, and never enough of the good, but Your Champions can't fail to right the balance. Certainly, no other local newspaper does anything quite like it. Some of the stories of courage and determination that come out of this annual campaign are inspirational, and quite often there isn't a dry eye in the house on ceremony night!
Other highlights of this Thursday's paper include Stephen Green's monthly gardening column, looking ahead to July; a preview of the Weekly News's celebrity football match in aid of Ty Gobaith taking place in Colwyn Bay this Sunday; a Past Times special in which a Falklands veteran from Rhos-on-Sea recalls his emotional homecoming; and our usual extensive coverage of local news, sport and entertainment.
