Grumpy Granny on... Welsh Politics

I DECIDED to call these occasional blogs Grumpy Granny because as I grow older I find myself developing the characteristics of Victor(ia) Meldrew.
My colleagues have lost count of the times I've scanned a news item on a local or national issue and shouted "Ludicrous!" And nine times out of ten my exclamation is prompted by the pontificating of a politician, or one of those nebulous government funded think-tanks or review bodies, which here in Wales seem to be proliferating faster than rhododendrons in Snowdonia.
Grumpy Granny on... Toll Roads

So Assembly transport minister Ieuan Wyn Jones has given an assurance that road charging will only be introduced on "new road networks" in Wales. Road charges would not be applied to existing roads, he said in a TV interview during a conference in Llandudno on Thursday.
No doubt the news will come as a relief to tourism bosses in North Wales who feared a rumour that the A55 was due to become a toll road was true. Imagine the impact charging to use what is at best a barely adequate highway would have on tourism. Visitors would no doubt stay away in their droves, because the alternative to using the A55 is to try to pick your way along a network of A-roads which take you through the centre of towns like Connah's Quay and Mostyn.
Counting the hits

There was some pleasing news from our Digital Team this week when they revealed that the amount of traffic on the Weekly News website has soared over the last few days and weeks.
The site is updated several times a day with exclusive breaking news, and last Thursday the site was kept busy with regular updates on the flooding, as well as an exclusive gallery of pictures by photographer Gwyn Roberts on the watery chaos in the Conwy Valley.
And our new Urdd Eisteddfod 2008 section is proving very popular. The bilingual section has all the latest news from the Urdd organisers as and when it happens, and is also the home of our weekly Urdd column. The May event is going to be big news in Conwy county this summer, bringing millions of pounds and thousands of people to Penrhyn Bay and the surrounding area - and the Weekly News is going to be at the heart of this amazing cultural event.
